A LOOK INTO THE PAST; THE HISTORY OF CAVES BEACH
The seaside township of Caves Beach was founded by local businessman Arthur Douglas (Art) Mawson. As a tribute to its founder, in 1960 the town was called Mawson but residents objected and in 1965 the name Caves Beach was restored.
Art Mawson bought large parcels of land at Caves Beach in the 1940's. By the late 1950's he had commenced an ambitious plan to turn his land into a new township. The plans, designed by Newcastle architect Frank Stone, included 1,000 building allotments, a modern tourist hotel and shopping complex, as well as bowling greens, tennis courts and a golf course.

Construction of Mawson Hotel at Caves Beach
Most of Art Mawson's plans for Caves Beach were accomplished, and as the town has continued to grow it has become one of the most desirable places to live in Lake Macquarie.
