LONG-TERM OUTLOOK FAVOURS
INVESTMENT IN PROPERTY
Buying property over the past 10 to 20 years has been the best investment compared to other asset classes including shares, according to a new report.
The report, commissioned by the Australian Direct Property Investment Association, shows over the 10 years to last December property provided strong returns, highest distributions, lowest volatility and best risk-adjusted returns. It compared property returns with shares, listed and residential property, cash, fixed interest and managed funds.

Association president Linden Toll said investors should be reminded that property investing is a long-term strategy.
“There is no doubt that there has been tremendous turmoil in investment markets over the past 12 months,” he said. “However, direct property is unique in that valuations are not sentiment driven.”
Property is less likely to suffer the dramatic highs and lows of other markets.
The report, by Group Atchison Consultants, showed direct property provided annual returns of 11.8 per cent over 10 years and 9.1 per cent over the past 20 years.
